What Is The Walker Basin?

To put it plainly, Walker Basin is a valley in California. It is part of the Southern Sierra Nevada, in Kern County, south of Lake Isabella and east of Bakersfield. The Basin is about eight miles long.

Who Is The Walker Basin Named After?

Joseph Reddford Walker. He was a pathfinder and scout for General Fremont. He came through the area in 1834 from Monterey and led his party out of the valley and over the pass.

That pass was later named Walker Pass as well. His namesake can also be attributed to the Walker River and Walker Lake in Nevada. Popular guy!

He is also famous for establishing a portion of the California Trail, a 1,600-mile trail for emigrants.

What Made The Valley Special?

Besides the valley’s immense beauty, Pony Express routes came through Walker’s Basin, delivering mail horseback between Visalia and Fort Tejon, also from Caliente to Kernville.

After 1865, a road was built heading north, and then Wells Fargo Company began service through Kern County, with a stage stop in the Basin in 1867. The teamster’s barn, used by the drivers for a change of horses, still stands at Rankin Ranch. We currently use it as a hay barn and storage facility.
