Helen Takes Over The Ranch
The story of the Guest Ranch is deeply rooted in the life of Helen Rankin. Following the unexpected loss of her husband, Leroy Rankin, who passed away at just 42 years old, Helen faced the daunting task of managing the Ranch. In that challenging time, she had to learn the intricacies of the cattle business, all while trying to preserve the family’s legacy.
Jump ahead to 1965, the Ranch and cattle business flourished under Helen’s guidance, yet she understood that growth was essential for survival. She embraced the challenge of adding a guest ranch to grow the business. This venture aligned perfectly with her passion for entertainment. She and Leroy had always welcomed large groups of friends and family with open arms for celebrations.
Her decision to incorporate a guest ranch into the cattle business was remarkable because it was truly unique for the time. Helen emerged as a pioneer in Agri-Tourism, inspiring many with her innovative vision. She gained recognition in the Sacramento Bee as a leader in diversifying agriculture.
The Rankin Guest Ranch
After the Guest Ranch was built, the Rankin family was excited to continue their ranching legacy. In 1969, Helen’s son, Bill, graduated with a degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of California Davis, and returned home, eager to jump into the family business. Just a couple of years later, in 1971, he tied the knot with Glenda Hill, who had spent her summers at the Ranch for four years.
Bill and Glenda raised four children: Jason, Rebecca, Sarah, and Amanda. Bill and Glenda’s children all graduated from college and now live on the Ranch, and they are all involved in the agriculture industry.
The Guest Ranch Today
Helen Rankin lived to see her Ranch and her family take over the day-to-day operations. At 89 years old, she passed away in 2003, leaving behind a thriving Guest Ranch and a tight-knit family that carries forward her spirit.
Today, Bill and Glenda Rankin and their children and grandchildren—sixth-generation members like Walker, Cody, Wyatt Rankin, Zachary Been, Emma Mae, and Josephine Wilder—continuously nurture and grow the ranch and cattle business.
