One of the simple joys of vacationing in a new place is discovering a part of its history. California is a big state with many unique stories and historic towns. One place of significance is the Tehachapi Mountains, at the southern end of the Sequoia National Forest. That’s Walker’s Basin. What Is Caliente, California?
Caliente, California, was mostly known as a railroad terminal in the 1870s. Before that, it was known as Allen’s Camp. When railroad construction reached the camp in 1875, the name was changed to Caliente. Once the railroad connected to the area, Caliente became a booming town for further railroad construction. Thousands of mostly Chinese laborers resided in the area for about 16 months to help construct the railroads through the mountain ranges.
Where Is Caliente?
It was founded a little more than 20 miles southeast of Bakersfield.
What Made Caliente So Important?
The town played an important role in furthering the development of the Southern Pacific Railroad. On a map, Caliente is roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The town became a hub for further railroad construction, and the Caliente Railroad Depot also brought many visitors to this otherwise unknown part of the state.
What Is Caliente Today?
While the period of westward expansion in the United States brought a boom in activity to the area, it didn’t continue that growth in the following years. The original town burned down decades ago and was never rebuilt. However, the surrounding area still has some residents. Caliente today is an unincorporated community.
What Is There To See In Caliente?
One of the biggest draws to the area is its rich railroad history. If you have a train enthusiast in your family, it’s well worth the trip to see Caliente, California. The railway is still very active as one of the primary lines to get goods out of the Central Valley of California out to the East. There are often train enthusiasts parked, taking photos of the trains coming through.
Furthermore, other sightseeing attractions like the Caliente General Store and a California Historical Landmark exist.
Another draw to the area is the surrounding nature, with its splendid rolling hills, towering mountains lining the horizon, and mostly dry climate. These conditions make for excellent horseback riding, hiking, and wildlife viewing. Otherwise, this is a quiet and peaceful countryside.
