Bakersfield is about 1 hour drive from the ranch, so make plans to stop and stretch your legs at one of these great places on your way to or from the ranch.

Here is how you can spend a day in Bakersfield, California.

Kern County Museum

For those who can’t get enough of history or museums, the Kern County Museum is a treasure trove of interesting stories. Learn about the early days of railroads, local history, one-room schoolhouses, and more. In 2008, Glenda (Hill) Rankin’s mother’s home was moved to the Kern County Museum.  Glenda and her sister, Dianne, researched the history of the house and found that it originally belonged to JJ Lopez who was the majordomo of the Tejon Ranch.  Through their research and fundraising efforts they were able to make this dream a reality.  The Lopez Hill House is on display near the main entrance to the museum.

Glenda and Dianne continued with efforts to preserve Kern County history when they spear headed the project to move country music legend, Merle Haggard’s, childhood home to the Museum.  This home was an authentic railroad boxcar that had been added onto by his father.  It was located just a few miles from the Museum in Oildale and in disrepair.  They organized fundraisers and events to raise community awareness and today the boxcar has been restored to its earlier glory for visitors to enjoy at the Kern County Museum.

Bakersfield Museum of Art

Another popular museum is the Bakersfield Museum of Art. Inside, you will find an excellent mix of contemporary and modern art that includes local, state, and national works of art. This means you can see paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media art exhibits. One of the highlights is strolling through the beautiful sculpture garden.  The Museum hosts a multitude of events and special displays.  Visit their website to learn about current offerings and make plans to visit on your way to or from the ranch.

Wind Wolves Preserve

If you want to see some magnificent wildlife, head to the Wind Wolves Preserve. There is also an interesting mix of wild animals like elk, mountain lions, and eagles.  It’s located at the base of the Grapevine on the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley.  The 93,000 acre preserve has numerous hiking trails and photo opportunities. It is especially beautiful during the spring with carpets of wildflowers covering the hillsides.
